Thesis Title: Ferruccio Busoni: A Phenomenological Approach to his Music and Aesthetics
About
Paul completed his PhD on 'Ferruccio Busoni: A Phenomenological Approach to his Music and Aesthetics' (March 2007) at Newcastle University under the supervision of Prof. David Clarke. His thesis uncovered a philosophic thread that runs through Busoni's aesthetic beliefs, and which can be sympathetically woven alongside phenomenological ideals. Prior models of phenomenological analysis were discussed, and a fresh methodology was introduced alongside a new form of analysis: Temporal Intentionality Graphs. Further, a new term was created, metatonal, to reflect the style of Busoni's pieces which are both 'with' and 'after' tonality. The thesis concluded with an appraisal of the method, and a proposal for how the analysis could be developed to explore similarly woven compositions.
