A Sisyphus of débuts: Ferruccio Busoni in Newcastle
Where: The Lit & Phil (NCL) When: 4th November 2009
Ferruccio Busoni (1866 -1924) was an Italian with a German education who composed, wrote opera libretti, produced creative transcriptions, taught master classes, wrote a wealth of aesthetic documents, and for most of his life travelled the world as a virtuosic concert pianist. He visited Newcastle three times and each time he performed at the Town Hall (now the site of the Civic Centre). This lecture will consider not only his programmes and a sense of their reception but also show how Busoni’s progressive musical ideas caused him to feel as if he was, in his words, a ‘Sisyphus of débuts’.
